SandSurfer
Project Type
Extra Curricular - Personal
Date
August 2022
What if shoes were immersive and not just walking tools?Sand surfer is a shoe that allows the user to be grounded in the environment of intent. It achieves this by allowing sand into the shoe.Would the user want sand in their shoes?...The sand is separated by a waterproof cork membrane, the mesh netting incorporated underneath allows sand to enter, however this membrane allows the user to sense the sand against their feet without direct contact with the user, Immersing them with the environment on a sandy shore, or the Desert dunes. This concept was Inspired by the Designer's visit to the Desert. The Shoe's bubbly form was inspired by ridges on Quad bike or ATV tyres. The soles can be separated and the cork unit can be worn alone as a light-weight sandal on the beach.

Lunch Set DesignIt's sealed by magnets?Brief - Design a Lunch box for the 'explorer'.The explorer is a User persona that takes part in activity and is exposed to various terrain. This would encompass Hikers, Campers, and Adventurers. They need durable equipment which is adapted to their lifestyle and Containers to carry their food.Solution: The Design features a lunchbox with rubber strips around the perimeter for grip on a stainless steel base, with an oak lid secured and sealed using magnets. The lid pivots about a point where it can be rotated outwards and used as an additional surface for dining. When bringing the lid to close, the two magnets secure it in place.

Solar Powered Light
Project Type
University project
Date
April 2024
Light DesignBattery Powered and a renewable energy source?Brief - Design a Product which can be used off grid, using an Independent Power supplyContext: Lebanon is a country in the middle east, a region with frequent sunshine. About 67.1% of daylight hours are sunny with the remaining 32.9% being cloudy or hazy. Some regions in Lebanon experience power outages of up to 12 hours a day.Solution: The Design is plastic lamp with a HDPE outer casing. HDPE is a common plastic know for it's strength and durability. The lamp works by using batteries. But without power, how could batteries be charged? This lamp utilizes the concept of rechargeable batteries, however the charging unit is combined with a mini solar panel and the user can place it anywhere in the sun. After charging the batteries they are inserted into the lamp attached to the sealing, this allows for even light distribution especially with its convex shape. Value is provided for the user as they will be able to function in their home as if the power was never gone, and repurposed!

Ornatura
Project Type
University project
Date
December 2024
An Indoor Speaker for StudentsDoes revision need to be boring with a portable buddy?Meet Ornatura, Inspired by Animism, nature and organic forms. Its form is designed to look lifelike but still, and accompany the user. Our User is a student, often tasked with the work of revisiting pre-learned content, sometimes learning from scratch, but ultimately, they've got to be focused for hours.Ornatura is a smart speaker with additional functions. It has a listening mode, productivity mode for scheduling activities and entertainment mode for the occasional karaoke. The vision was inspired by a study method known as the pomodoro technique. The student studies for a set time, usually around 20 minutes then takes a break for 5.In those 5 minutes? Switch Orantura to entertainment modeOrnatura will echo the users voice back and transform into a karaoke-like item.
In productivity mode, the user can add their schedule for the day and the speaker will announce it at the given time.

Mumina Aweys x RAF
University project: RAF museum
Date
April 2025
An Innovative Toy Spitfire. What is wonder?A feeling of awe and curiosity sparked by something beautiful, mysterious, or beyond understanding. The Designer believes that this is the exact feeling that toys evoke for a child. The Joy in the unknown of a surprise, an element aimed to be produced with this product.Brief - Design a Flying toy for the shop floor. This was produced in collaboration with the
RAF museum. Seta C-Jet is modeled by the rare sky-blue reconnaissance Spitfire. The young user throws it with its wings folded into the sky, and mid-flight is the surprise. It opens up in response to the motion and air, and then glides consequentially. This simple concept would evoke a sense of wonder, Joy and satisfaction, which would then bring the engaged user back to experience the same event all over again.

An Eco-friendly redesign, for a fabric shaver. What was the initial product?A re-chargeable fabric shaver with an LED screen showing the battery status. It used 6 blades , and motor technology to solve the problem of renewing clothing.Brief - Complete a life cycle analysis to re-design a product, and generate re-design ideas.A life cycle analysis was completed to determine how the product could be improved in terms of sustainability. The focus was on reducing carbon footprint, replacing features with more efficient systems and enhancing the user experience.Solution: See details in the labelled image below

About me
Mumina Aweys
BSc Product Design Engineering
Student
I aim to create the next new vision, and turn original ideas into reality, while curating meaningful experiences. I started product design as a very curious person; it was asking 'how was this made?' that got me into this space.
Now, I am actively seeking a design internship for 2025-26
Product design is a discipline that has the ability to transform our space, and way of life. Explore my portfolio to discover the essence of my design philosophy.

The details...
Study
The design began with market and technical research.
User pain points from research:
Most flying toys on the market are made from foam, as they are soft and light which makes them safe and aerodynamic.
Common technologies used include piston or launch based mechanisms.
Ideation process

Foam Prototypes
Decision making
A unique mechanism was chosen to set it apart from the market, inspired by the 'bakugan' toys - 'bakujoint' and transformation concept.
As the toy needs to be durable and able to fly. It was designed from polypropylene, however the overall structure has a wall thickness of 1-2 mm and is hollow to allow for easy injection moulding. It is supported by bosses and corresponding screws.
The use of foam to cushion certain areas of the toy has been explored for safety.
Colour: Sky blue - aimed for both boys and girls, addressing the concerns of some users.
Workshop: Finished Prototype
